Theology is in the every day.

I'm not sure about you, but when I think of theology I think of grey haired professors sitting in a dimly lit chapel library hidden amongst stacks of  concordances, bibles and scrolls reading by candlelight.

Maybe a little exaggerated but you get the picture. The idea of theology can seem dull or too advanced for the average joe. But the truth is all of us are theologians.

I recently heard a quote from Lisa Harper, Christian author and speaker, that just made things seem less intimidating. In Greek, theology is two words, Theos, meaning God, and logos, meaning words or conversation. So theology isn't a subject matter, it's a lifestyle. Theology is having conversations about God.

And who do we have as the greatest example of being a theologian?
Jesus Himself. He did nothing else but have conversations about His Father, our Mighty God, during His time on earth.
The Gospels are brimming with examples of Jesus having every day conversations with every day people about His Father. Yes, at times He spoke in parables, but He was always talking to the average person, especially to those that others shunned and rejected.
Like the first time He revealed Himself, which was to the woman at the well, He didn't judge her, condemn her, discipline her, He spoke with her. He had a conversation with her about God. He shared with her what was to come in a conversation around a village well. That kind of reminds me of those scenes in movies where people are hanging around the office water cooler. That's what Jesus was doing here, meeting her in the ordinary to have that conversation about God.

How does that make you feel that thought that you are an everyday theologian?

To have a conversation about God you don't need a degree or a doctorate, you just have to open your mouth and speak.
I'm not in any way saying if you are called to ministry that training isn't needed, because definitely training is needed and if you want to study theology I think that that is incredibly important. I just wanted to point out that theology itself isn't something that should be feared or intimidated by. It's not something that is only learned in an enormous dusty textbook, it's in the every day conversations, in our every day encounters with those around us. It's in the conversation with your co-worker. It's in the bedtime story with your children. It's even in that quick morning huddle around the water cooler.
When we talk about God to others we are practicing theology.

God's blessings upon you all.
Shalom,
